Prof. Oladapo A. Ashiru

Prof. Oladapo Ashiru is a Consultant Reproductive Biologist and IVF pioneer. He qualified MBBS from the University of Lagos in 1974, followed by MS and PhD in Reproductive Physiology from the University of Nebraska. He holds HCLD and Clinical Consultant certifications from the American Board of Bioanalysis.
At age 32 he was appointed Professor of Medicine at the University of Lagos College of Medicine, making him the youngest professor of medicine in Africa to date. He was awarded Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in 2005 for contributions to assisted conception.
He pioneered IVF and embryo transfer in West Africa in 1983–1984 and co-pioneered Nigeria’s first IVF baby in 1989. His 1979 discovery of the FSH positive feedback mechanism underpins modern gonadotropin stimulation protocols. He also pioneered preimplantation genetic diagnosis for chromosomal disorders, sickle cell disease, and family balancing in the region.
He is currently Secretary-General of the International Federation of Fertility Societies, President of the Africa Reproductive Care Society Foundation, and Foundation President of the Academy of Medicine Specialties of Nigeria and the African Federation of Fertility Societies.
Prof. Ashiru is CEO and Chief Medical Director of the MART Group of Health Services in Lagos, which includes the Medical ART Center, MART Diagnostic Center, Mart Medicare, Mart Life Detox Clinic, and the Institute of Assisted Reproductive Technology. He has authored 150+ publications and 4 books.
